The Salt Lake Friday Night Skate will kick off summer starting from Liberty Park at 8pm, and tour through the downtown SLC area. We will meet up at the Bakery for re-fueling en-route. Helmets are required.

Meet at Liberty Park, 7:45pm, Friday JUNE 18th for the inaugural Friday Night Roll thru the streets of Salt Lake City. Included on the tour de jour: gateway, drivers ed, salt lake's best secret roller rink,10 floors of rolling & carving bliss, the library luge, and.... no Friday night skate is complete without a pit stop for cookies & water at Gourmandise' Bakery on 300 East.

So, tune up those skates, grab your helmet, tell your friends, and see you out rolling!

Friday nite rolls begins whenever people want to skate. Last season was pretty slow n' go as far as skaters coming out, so let's get some feedback on whose interested and road conditions.

Jazz Festival this Friday night. Anyone having the 'Roller Blues'? Ya miss one week, and the feet get itchin' to roll. It's time to get the ole' quads outta the closet and hit the pavement. Let's go retro skating thru the streets of Salt Lake City. Don't have quads? No worries, inline's or any roller skates will do..... just get out and roll to the blues, jazz,anything that gets you rolling!

Fun times sweeping thru town these past few weekends. Bits of grit along 800 south, tar snakes on 2oo west, it's a jungle out there.... otherwise fair rollin'. Train station proved smooth as ever with no interruptions of the security kind ;) Rolled through the Chalk Art exhibit last week- very cool!

Skating the empty ice rink at Gallivan set security in motion, maybe the guy just needed to stretch his legs. As people started to gather in to watch us, we were forced to move along... Gosh, to think we were in a skating rink and we were gonna be asked to leave!!! in the words of Charlie Brown:"Argh!!" Our mistake, we actually thought the rink was for skating....in the words of Homer: "duh-ope!"

Join us for more SLC around town fun, adventure, and sweets at the Bakery next weekend.

Until then keep your wheels rolling smoothly folks!

Haven't really checked the course since last season... if memory serves, there may still be some construction lingering around 200 west/700 south and rough pavement along 800 south. We'll discuss the course or route before the skate and will have current information then.

Longest Summers Night

Hot night for seven skaters and gimpy me on my single head out of Liberty into the oven. Andrew and Dr Jess set the pace for skaters Kim and Eric BOTH Steves and regular Kevin. Andrew intent on creating a best places to skate video for his blog got a lot of "Speed Racer" shots of everybody.

Zen and the Art of Speedskating world famous blog is a gift Andrew has created for the loyal skater tribe. I hope he can sustain the grueling blogging training blogging training cycle his writing and photos and now increasing videos are very entertaining.

Where is the night skate? As it seemed the sunlight never really went away it is the perfect once a year long slow fade to dark. The Utah Art Fest provided some funky music to sashay past their darn barriers. We speed racers ripped to the Love home for tasty frozen treats on the spacious front porch.

Friday Night Report: The new route seems to be a success with skaters, but please wear the skid lids people, this is street skating. The new route skips 200 South altogether, and continues northbound on 200 West to 100 north, with a quick hill dip under the venue formerly known as the Delta Center (or whatever they are calling it these days). The West High driving course proves to be a nice place to work on figure 8's and cross-overs. It's hit n' miss with the Old Hardware Bld'g parking lot, seems some joy riders laid enough rubber to warrant dropping a barrier of RR ties down through the middle of what once was a speed skaters sanctuary. Plan to add in the parking garage for fun and adventure next week, nothing beats 8 floors of carving bliss!! ...well, maybe a conga line of 14 skaters on the library luge...now that's entertainment folks!

Wow it feels good to be back on skate wheels. We will be skating Friday nights starting some time in May we have not settled on an exact date yet. Thanks to the TRAX line construction turning down 400 West from South Temple then turning West on 200 South we MUST alter our route and stay away from the Gateway area. We are looking for your input for a safe route using bike lanes or shared roadways. I recently surveyed the bike lane running North from 800 South on 600 West it is still unsafe for skaters we will NOT consider that route. I really want to find a safe route to the olympic parking lot behind the Salt Lake Hardware Building which thanks to Greg Garton became our destination and turn around point. Perhaps we can find a way in from the East by going North on 200 West under the big Salt Palace dip to 100 North and then West. PLEASE post suggestions by clicking on Comments.

Skating Under the Harvest Moon

Night comes sooner now I am saddened to see summer go. We skate Friday nights for fun and friends yes, and to stay accustomed to skating through the winters darkness. This night was one of those cool magical moments when summer gives over to fall I could skate all night if I could only keep my legs under me at such a late hour. The harvest moon rising over the Wasatch darkened by western wild fires. The old man is much more visible it is like an old friend peeking over the Wasatch saying get those ski's ready.

We had a great group talented new skater Cheyenne brought along with her mom a welcome family atmosphere to the skate. Smiles all around with a perfect September night except the blustery windy ending with a push back to the park. Where is that ski wax?

Wanker Wets Weekly

Sturdy FNS skater Kevin and I headed North from Liberty Park on a beautiful warm night. Kevin suggested a new simple and less crowded route. Eight hundred South Westbound to 600 West, Northbound along an inconsistent bike lane on a quiet and small street. Then East on 200 South one block back to Northbound 500 West back on the old route. Crossing the train tracks on 500 West wasn't too bad almost as smooth as the Trax tracks.

Rolling up to a stop light at West Temple we jumped to the sidewalk leaving room for a carriage. I noticed a weaving male figure watering a newspaper vending box. Guess you have an issue with the City Weekly I said. He mumbled F***ing weekly as he continued to proudly empty his huge bladder. I am sure glad he wasn't driving he might have bumped over us with his anger at the Weekly.

We ended up at the bakery with no interest in sweets we had soup and a sandwich it was a beautiful cool night.

Next Friday we will hear of Kim & Eric's adventure at the St Paul Inline Marathon. They had some awesome times Eric 1:22:52.9 Kim 2:07:13.7.

Tour de Utah Night

We rolled out of Liberty Park me on my Canndondale with Eric, Jon, and Steve. Wimping out from a crash this week it was very different biking the route with clipless pedals constantly starting and stopping, clipping in and out, it was a real challenge of coordination. Although I think it was my first FNS without falling down.

We hit the tour course hearing marshals whistles at 200 South and 400 West. Get off the course Jamie there are bikes coming! WOW amazing lean cycling machines zipping bye in the final stage to the finish after a week of long climbs throughout Northern Utah the sidewalks filled with Outdoor retailers and wholesalers cheering the riders on. Jon's red National Skate Patrol t-shirt made it easy to find our little group moving through the crowd. No ramp adventures the guys passed since it was a small group and getting my bike into the elevator wouldn't be much fun. We finished early but it was a lovely night.

Adult "Rollerbladers" Cited for Trespass

Well almost. Seven big kids wearing wheels crammed into a parking ramp elevator on a Friday night looking for adventure. MY KIND OF FUN! We were joined by former Boston Inline Speedskating Club president Jon Scarlet who is leading some fun skates in Park City. Check out the SkateNow link for info there. John is a wealth of information about skating and is an "All around good ass guy".

Ok, I will bring an actual camera next time and we will discuss the route and any changes with EVERYBODY before rolling out!

What a SKATE June 23

What a picture perfect night when we the seven rolled out. Six regular FNS skaters and one (skating) newbie Andrew Love speedskater/website designer joined us with his enthusiastic and infectious bravado check out his site to see his story and pictures of the skate he is a talented writer and photographer. Kim and Eric back from the Napa Marathon it was great to hear about their adventures especially the SF FNS scary darkness descending the mighty Presidio.

FRIDAY NIGHT SKATES...well kids we did the Grandaddy of all Friday Night Skates this past weekend! Yepper, 10 fast-paced miles of rolling hill bliss thru the streets of San Francisco...whew! the hills were hairy, the streets chuck full o' holes, fast movin' cars, and slow moving bums, and what we thought (er, rather hoped to be) to be ocean water.... despite the pitch black, and a few decents into the unknown we made it back safely, but covered with a silty black dust from the rails of Broadway tunnel.

About 150 crazy skaters came out, along with founder Dave Miles Jr., who skated the whole way with his boom box strapped into a jog-buggy. We were jammin' to retro-techno-disco-funk tunes all through the city....doing the groove thing!

Our humble lil' SLC street skate seems shadowed by the stellar magnitude of the SF FNS...but hey, like us they started with a few crazy skaters and whola! Today, 13 + years later, it is still a huge and continuing success, though our streets are far cleaner with no hills by any comparrision to those in SF......"the road goes on forever and the skating never ends".

Whahooo...we're skating again. Grease those bearings baby we are rolling. Winter and your cold winds bye bye. Welcome the spring by skating with the kids from the Salt Lake Inline Club (SLIC) as we get back to skating on Friday nights and celebrate cinco de Mayo . We are all Greek this week end so grab your toga and your skates to join the Salt Lake Inline Club SLIC for a night on the town. The group will be skating from and back to Liberty Park, through downtown areas of Salt Lake City. There will be a few scheduled stops including the Bakery for "sweets" and Artesian Well Park for a welcome water break. The route includes use of streets, bike lanes, and sidewalks, crosses the Trax line and the terrain is varied. We skate at a moderate pace, distance is 6.2 miles, and will conclude in 1 hour to 1 hour & 1/2. Basic skating skills (striding, stopping, and turning) are required. All skaters must be able to STOP. Wear light colored or reflective clothing, carry a blinking light. Bring along I.D., water, and money for refreshments. Helmets are required and other protective gear (wrist, knee, & elbow pads) is highly recommended. This is an adult social skate, however young adults are welcome to participate. June 10 Skate WAS FUN!

Boris, Steve, Eric, Kim, Ken, Kevin, and Paul at the Gateway halfway through the skate. We had a great 2 hour trip through Salt Lake City with an unplanned stop at Dicks Sports where the friendly employees found a handy skate tool for some needed axel tightening. And our new favorite gravity games skate park where Boris WINS! Lots of skate and fitness advice from speedskating coaches Eric and Boris. Our new friend Tom came for most of the skate hope he got to the airport ok! Jamie (ok it is a better phone than camera)
